The Social Origins And Effects Of Extravagant Weddings In The Eritrean Tigrinya Society

Most of the traditions in the world consent that weddings are supposed to be a moment of merriment for the bride and the groom who are vowing and commencing their love to one another through an endless union.However,as cultures have been utterly distorted towards consumer-led practices,the traditional features of weddings have gradually been washed-out and made way for the newly evolved lavish weddings.Extreme consumption brought the snowballing importance of consumer behaviors in weddings which have eventually signaled the emergence of a new era in the history.Nowadays,people have ultimately reached the stage of making thrilling weddings just to become distinctive.The purpose of this study is to investigate the current trends of weddings in the Eritrean Tigrinya society.This qualitative study has engaged in-depth interviews,focus group discussions and participant observation as methods of data collection.Using cross-sectional analysis,this research has proved the practicality of the extravagant wedding ceremonies in Tigrinya.Moreover,the push factors for the extravagance and the visible consequences of the escalations both in individuals and in the society have been discovered.The outcomes of the research demonstrated that there is a severe degree of extravagance in the Tigrinya weddings;almost four out of five weddings are expensive and luxurious.Lack of awareness,societal pressure,and show-off are the principal motives behind these hyperbolic reactions.Economic,psychological and social problems are the main problems generated by these escalations.Overall,the study has found that the Tigrinya weddings performances are mainly social requirements rather than individuals' willingness.Furthermore,the study scrutinized the governmental,religious,and community-based campaigns which are making considerable efforts to diminish these escalations.
