Although Afghanistan achieved independence as early as 1919,the social status of Afghan women has always been low due to the influence of tribal traditions and religions. In the last century, there were two reforms had been carried out by Amanullah Khan and Mohamed Daud. All though the reforms had brought some freedom to women, they failed at last because of the conservatives' opposition. In the 1990 s,the human rights problems which the Afghan women faced were particularly acute. In 1994,a group called the Taliban emerged, with the aim of establishing Afghanistan as a purely Islamic state during the civil war in Afghanistan. The Taliban grew rapidly, they occupied much of Afghanistan very quickly and established a national regime in 1996.They imposed harsh sharia laws in areas they control, and many of them had caused serious problems of women.Women have to abide by strict rules when they got dressed. They can't go out alone, can't participate in the work, can't accept education, even more, the married women can't rebel against domestic violence, the ill women can't get timely treatment. The problems of women in the Taliban era were more serious than any other era in the history of Afghanistan. Many women had been beaten or arrested due to violation of the ban;a lot of people fled abroad in order to avoid the Taliban, the ban of employment had exacerbated social poverty, with the ban of education making Afghanistan the country with the highest illiteracy rate, while the ban of medical had led to a high mortality rate among women and children in Afghanistan. The causes of these problems of women are various,in addition to the influence of traditional culture mentioned above, the members of the Taliban who held the extreme thought and the values in Afghanistan which different from the west are important factors that lead to problems of women. The problems of Afghan women in the Taliban era had gained international attention, and the media had carried out a lot of publicity,in the meantime, many celebrities had criticized the Taliban publicly. As the public opinion swelled, theinternational organizations have begun to impose sanctions on the Taliban, including the suspension of aid measures. The United Nations attacked the Taliban by the UN Human Rights Conventions, but the Taliban did not compromised. It was not until the911 that the Taliban fell under American forces, and the problems of Afghan women eased.
