Research On The Transformation And Development Of The People's Progressive Party Of Guyana

The People's Progressive Party of Guyana(PPP)was founded on January 1,1950 and has gone through more than 60 years of stormy weather.PPP has been actively exploring the future development path that suits Guyana since its establishment.Even under the tremendous impact of the drastic changes in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe,PPP has not stopped the pace of exploration.This article takes Guyana's situation at home and abroad in the specific period as its research background,the exploration of the future development path as its research theme,the theoretical change and practical exploration of PPP as two main research lines,and conducts a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the reform and development of PPP from historical,theoretical and realistic levels.Looking at the development history of PPP for more than 60 years,it is found that the theoretical changes that PPP took after the drastic changes in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe is the first time that PPP has adjusted and reformed its own theoretical program and policy.Before the sudden change of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe,PPP advocated "Guyana-style socialist development path",and elaborated the specific connotation of this road from the aspects of the judgment of times,objectives of struggle,leadership,national front,and diplomatic orientation,etc.Later,due to the influence of the drastic changes in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and the changes of the political status of PPP,PPP chose to adjust the development path of the future society with "democracy" and "development" as the core from the perspective of the new ruling party,and proposed a new "Path of Development,Democracy and Progress".In this reform,the theoretical adjustment of PPP clearly showed the following characteristics:strong adaptability to the new international situation,the pursuit of development and democracy,the weakening of ideological colors,the dilution of radical color,and the deepening of reformism.Its pursuit of political values also shows the characteristics of being equal to the social system,and inclining to "intermediary" and "pragmatism".After the reform,PPP stood at the center of the political arena in Guyana through democratic elections in late 1992 and remained in power until 2015.During this period,PPP played a constructive role in the political,economic,and social life of Guyana,which making the national economy of Guyana have a good trend of development.As a traditional Marxist party that used to follow the Communist Party of Soviet Union,the PPP has always adhered to the interests of the working class and the people during the reforms,and maintains the distinct characteristics of the left-wing parties.But after the reform,PPP has obviously paid more attention to nation-building and continuously diluted their ideological colors,and some reformist policies even heralded the party's tendency to move closer to the Social Democratic Party.Although PPP faces challenges from itself,internal political situations and ethnic culture after the defeat of the 2015 election,it still has the strength and possibility of returning to the center of political arena under the new historical conditions.
