Currently,with the rising rate of sex crimes facing public security agencies and the promulgation of the Domestic Violence Law,female police officers could,and should,play an increasingly important role in fighting such crime.However,sexism in society and gender-based occupational segregation in police agencies still constitute a barrier in bring female police officers' capability into full play.This situation can be a huge waste of human resources for public security agencies and at the same time hinders the career advancement of female police officers.To help address the problem,this research,by reviewing female police officers' work and life,analyzing the hurdles and contributing factors of their career advancement,provides feasible countermeasures to help female police officers in their professional development.Through literature review,data collection and on-site interview,the author gets a clearer picture of female police officers' professional development,seeing the progress made,while in the meantime observing the problems,as reflected in the data.Female police officers' career advancement,the author concludes,should not be their own affair,but should rely on the concerted efforts of female police officers,police organizations and even the wider society.The thesis falls into five parts.Part one is an introduction,making clear the research objective and background,and conducting a literature review of female police officers' professional development both at home and abroad.Part two focuses on analysis of the status quo of female officers' policing career,covering position held,rank and occupation safety.Compared with the past,female police officers' career advancement is looking rosier both in terms of recruitment and promotion,but problems remain.Part three is need analysis,delving into the necessity for researching female police officers' professional development as required by policing in the new era.Part four explores the hurdles hindering female police officers' policing career and the reasons behind: sexism in society,gender-based occupational segregation in police agencies and self-imposed limitations on the part of female police officers.The reasons can be traced to female police officers' professional environment which needs improving,insufficient organization support and lack of motivation on the part of female police officers.Part five elaborates on countermeasures and the measures for optimizing female police officers' professional development include: 1)publicity work for gender equality by the wider society and legal guarantee and policy support for females to assume policing jobs;2)organizational culture featuring gender equality incubated by police agencies,customized recruit regime to boost female police officers' sense of fulfilment and the establishment of National Female Police Officers Information System to safeguard in an all-round way female police officers' professional development;3)multi-dimensional career plan based on female police officers' rising from mediocrity and efforts to strike a balance between life and work,and the cultivation of a female culture in policing to contribute to their career development.
