Reasons For South Korea To Strengthen Korea-us Alliance In The Post-cold War Period

Since the Korea-US Alliance signed the Korea-US Joint Defense Treaty in 1953,it has existed for more than half a century.From the perspective of American military alliance system in East Asia,Korea-US alliance is an important part of this system.Of course,the establishment and strengthening of the military alliance between South Korea and the United States is not for no reward,but for military security protection and economic assistance from the alliance.Although the establishment and development of the Korea-US alliance is not smooth sailing,based on the consideration of international environment and national strategy,especially after the cold war,the common interests of the two sides have gradually increased,and the Korea-US alliance has become increasingly strengthened.The alliance shows new characteristics.First,the ROK-US alliance expands its security cooperation mechanism,conducts bilateral or multilateral military exercises and conducts security meetings on specific issues.Second,the ROK-US alliance strengthens cooperation in various fields and enriches the connotation of the alliance,including cooperation on Peninsula issues,economic and trade cooperation,cooperation in cyberspace and space.The alliance model is redefined,and the alliance relationship is transformed to a comprehensive strategic alliance,an autonomous cooperative alliance and a multilateral alliance.Based on the Neoclassical Realism theory,this paper analyses the motivation of the strengthened development of the Korea-US alliance in the Post-Cold War period from the perspective of Korea.Neoclassical realism theory is a cross-level analysis theory,which is devoted to explaining how the domestic political elements of unit actors interact with the system environment in which they live.It takes the system level factors as independent variables,the unit level factors as intervention variables,and analyses how the internal structure of the country filters external threats and opportunities,and how the leaders of the country evaluate them.Establishing a foreign policy theory to explain state behavior by assessing threats,formulating strategies,mobilizing social resources and supporting these strategies.The motivation of the strengthening of the Korea-US alliance and the motivation of the system level are that South Korea is facing increasing security threats,including the threat of North Korea and the wrong perception of China's rise.Secondly,it is the result of the joint promotion of various factors in Korea,that is,the motivation at the domestic level.Korea seeks national interests,including economic interests,military interests and political interests,with the Korea-US alliance.In addition,the potential role of the Korean political elite in promoting and social identity also has an impact on the strengthening of the alliance.The strengthening trend of Korea-US alliance in the Post-Cold War era has had an important impact on the international and regional situation.As far as Korea and the United States are concerned,they will continue to maintain all-round alliance relationship in accordance with their own interests.As far as the impact on China is concerned,the strengthening of the Korea-US alliance not only aggravates the security pressure around it,but also provides an important channel for the United States to return to the Asia-Pacific region,which hinders the rise of China.In this context,China should take the necessary measures to deal with it.On the one hand,China and the United States should continue to build a new type of relations between major powers,prevent strategic misjudgments between the two sides,and strive for a peaceful rise time for us.On the other hand.China should provide more international public goods to its neighboring countries and even the whole world,and deepen its neighboring countries'efforts to China.Cognition of peaceful rise.
