After the Korean War, the United States and South Korea made up the United States-South Korean Alliance which originally aimed to defense the threaten from North Korea and Soviet Union. South Korea is being protected by U.S. forces in Korea and U.S-ROK Alliance is one of the stable alliances in the Cold War. On one hand, South Korea was abundantly assisted by U.S. in economic and military which turned to be the developed country now. On the other hand, U.S. could make its influence in Asia-Pacific area.With the end of Cold War and the development of the world, U.S.-ROK Alliance has been confronted serious challenges in the new international environment. Along with the recovery of Korean nationalism and the surges of anti-U.S. sentiment upward day after day and the fast growth of South Korean economy, the U.S-ROK Alliance has been challenged. However, to maintain the alliance is necessary to the two countries. Moreover, the alliance will not be just a copy of the past, it needs change to conform to the new conditions. It will be a more equal and comprehensive alliance.Alliance Theory and Interest Theory are used in the thesis by which the necessity of the U.S.-ROK alliance's establishment, maintainance and adjustment is fully analyzed. Furthermore, the inevitability of the existence of the U.S.-ROK alliance is also involved. There are three parts in the thesis, the U.S.-ROK alliance's establishment and current situation are refered in the first part; The second part is mainly about the content of the U.S.-ROK alliance's maintainance and adjustment; The future of the alliance is involved in the last part.
