Equality is the big issue in contemporary political philosophy. The widespread phenomena of inequality are open to moral objection. But it is not clear what the moral reasons are for objecting inequality.T.M.Scanlon explored this subjection in his book Why does Inequality Matter? This paper aims at introducing the main point of Why does Inequality Matter? and making a brief review of Scanlon's thoughts of equality. In general,Scanlon on behalf of the relational egalitarianism suggested that the issue of equality is relational and pluralistic. There are many different reasons for objecting to inequality, and that these depend on the way that an inequality affects or arises from the relations between individuals. There are various forms of inequality, various kinds of reasons for objecting inequality, and these diverse objections to inequality overlap.Primarily,Scanlon analyzed six kinds of reasons.Inequality can be objectionable because 1.it creates humiliating differences in status;2.it undermines equality of economic opportunity;3.it undermines the fairness of political institutions;4.it results from violation of a requirement of equal concern for the interests of those to whom the government is obligated to provide some benefit;besides,Scanlon also discussed the relation between equality and deserve.I shall discuss scanlon's views on these subjects in each chapter of the text.
