Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC)in 2012,China's new group of leaders with Xi Jinping as general secretary has collectively proposed a series of new thoughts on how to direct China in the world full of uncertainties.Against the backdrop of China entering a new era.are western media aware of China's new thoughts of governance?How do they report these new thoughts?This paper focuses on a representative American newspaper,The New York Times,and hopes to understand the overseas public opinion of the New Thoughts of Governance on China.The concept of "New Thoughts of Governance on China" can be divided into 19 sub-concepts:(1)the Chinese Dream/the China Dream;(2)the Belt and Road Initiative/One Belt One Road;(3)A Community of Shared Future/A Community with Shared Future for Mankind;(4)Socialism with Chinese Characteristics;(5)Socialist Democracy;(6)Rule of Law/Law-based Governance;(7)Strengthen Party Self-discipline/Operate the CPC under Strict Discipline/Exercise Strict Party Discipline;(8)New Normal of Economic Development;(9)Open Economy;(10)New Concept of Development;(11)the Core Socialist Values/the Core Values of(Chinese)Socialism;(12)Confidence in Culture/Cultural Confidence;(13)Ecological Civilization Development/Conservation/Progress;(14)Beautiful China;(15)A New Model of Major-country Relationship/A New Type of Major Power Relationship;(16)Peaceful Development;(17)Mutual Learning Among/Between Civilizations;(1 8)Modernizing National Defence and Armed Forces;(1 9)Building A Strong Military".These 19 sub-concepts become main keywords for selecting reports from the official website of The New York Times.The paper studies 282 China-related reports over the past five years,focusing on three aspects:the subject choice of The New York Times,the inclination of reporting,and why The New York Times reports China's new thoughts in such way.The study shows that The New York Times has a clear preference when reporting New Thoughts of Governance on China.In terms of subject choice,The New York Times tilts towards Chinese dreams,the Belt and Road Initiative and China's domestic politic building while playing down China's efforts in economic reform,ecologic conservation and social advancement.In terms of report inclination.The New York Times tends to adopt a negative attitude and denounced tone in line with its traditional standpoints towards China-related issues.The China's image framed by The New York Times tends to reinforce the established stereotypes about China and entail unfavourable impressions.The reasons why The New York Times tends to report China negatively are related to American ideology,national interests,western culture and journalist traditions in the US.This paper analyses all New Thoughts of Governance on China covering political aspect,economic aspect,cultural aspect,social aspect,military aspect,diplomatic aspect and ecological aspect.By studying the authoritative mainstream media,we can glimpse how the west considers China's New Thoughts of Governance.In the future,more American media ought to be studied and compared in order to draw a wider picture of international public opinions about New Thoughts of Governance on China.
