Poverty is still the main social problem that plagues many underdeveloped countries,developing countries and even developed countries.Poverty can erect serious influence on national security,social stability and people's life.As an island country in the Indian Ocean,Sri Lanka is an important supportive country.However,history,politics,civil war and natural disasters impose multiple restrictions on Sri Lanka's national economic development.Poverty is closely linked with the development of economy.The development level of economy of Sri Lanka is not very high,but Sri Lanka alleviates poverty in a high pace and achieve great success in poverty alleviation.Based on this background,in-depth investigation and systematic research on the poverty issue in Sri Lanka needs to be conducted from the perspective of historical,economic,social,and natural factors.The research will be based on relevant economic statistics,scholars',writings,and related poverty theories.By studying poverty situation,the reasons which lead to poverty and poverty-alleviation policies,this paper will figure out Sri Lanka,s poverty issues as well as some effective poverty-alleviation policies and provide some experience for China's poverty-alleviation cause.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part will illustrate the concept and meaning of poverty.Besides,this part will also identify the measurement of poverty from the international and Sri Lanka's perspective.The second part will analyse the poverty5s situation and characteristics in Sri Lanka.The third part will explore the factors that cause poverty in Sri Lanka.This part will explore the causes of poverty in Sri Lanka from the perspectives of history,politics,economy.The fourth part will sort out relevant policies and measures taken by governments and non-governmental organizations in poverty alleviation in Sri Lanka since its independence and assess the effectiveness of Sri Lanka's poverty-alleviation policies.Relevant poverty-alleviation measures have effectively reduced poverty in Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka's poverty rate is falling and poverty degree is becoming light.However,from the perspective of the current economic development status and structure of Sri Lanka,political parties' struggles,ethnic and religious conflicts and natural disasters can have harmful influence on the economic development of Sri Lanka in the future,thus increasing the poverty rate and aggravating the poverty level.
