Cross-strait Relations In The Speeches Of Chinese National Leaders

The problems between Chinese mainland and Taiwan have a long history.In the past seventy years,the speeches given by national leaders of Chinese Mainland on Taiwan Issue are most concerned by both sides of strait and people all over the world who care about the Taiwan Issue.These speeches are the basis of mainland's policy towards Taiwan and they are also the most authoritative metatext during this political communication process.This paper focuses on a perspective of frame theory,using content analysis to carry out the diachronicity of frames from three aspects---the essence of cross-strait relations,the guiding principles for resolving the Taiwan issue and the factors affecting the reunification of two sides.This paper found that in terms of the essence of cross-strait relations,before the 1980s,both sides were mainly hostile to each other.After the 1980s,the frames of "family" and "both sides are Chinese" gradually dominated.But as long as "Taiwan independence force" proved to be active,the "hostile" frame comes back.In the settlement of guiding principles of solving Taiwan issue,before the 1970s,the dominant "strengthening strategic preparation" frame was adopted.After the 1970s,"peaceful reunification/'one country,two systems'/peaceful development" and "anti-independence and promote unification" gradually took the lead.In the past two decades,the frame of"anti-independence and promote unification" became more prominent.In terms of factors affecting the reunification of two sides,before the 1990s,the "foreign forces'occupied a dominant position.After the 1990s,the "Taiwan independence forces"became the most important factor.However,after 2010,the number of "Taiwan's disagreements with Chinese mainland" frame has increased significantly.Therefore,the significance of this research lies in the fact that,on the one hand,it can lay the foundation for understanding the communication logic of Chinese mainland's Taiwan policy and the future dissemination effect,and on the other hand,it can also provide a supplement of empirical research method for existing Taiwan studies.
