The Study On The Refugee Policy Of Italian Right-Wing Populist Government

The refugee problem is a worldwide problem with a long history.With the development of globalization,the problem of refugees has increasingly become a problem that cannot be ignored in international politics.In 2015,the Syrian war caused large-scale refugees,and a large number of refugees flooded into Europe,making it difficult for European countries to parry,leading to the refugee crisis in European countries.The refugee crisis is particularly difficult for Italy.Due to its geographical location,it was not only the first to be hit by refugees from the Mediterranean,but also to implement relevant provisions in legal documents such as the Dublin Convention.In addition to the unstable domestic political situation,frequent government changes,and long-term economic downturn,this crisis has caused serious difficulties for Italy,and it has also made Italy continue to find suitable ways to deal with it.In this regard,the Italian right-wing populist government that came to power in 2018 has adopted an extremely tough policy to respond to the refugee crisis from various aspects such as law,economy,public opinion,and bilateral relations.This article studies the characteristics and effectiveness of the populist government's refugee policy based on the time when the Italian right-wing populist party took power.After the Italian populist party came to power,it strictly restricted the size of incoming refugees;strengthened the screening of illegal immigrant status in the country;canceled the humanitarian protection of illegal immigrants;simplified asylum procedures,and strengthened the control and repatriation of illegal refugees.Eventually,the number of refugees and illegal immigrants arriving in Italy has decreased significantly,and the measures have achieved certain results.However,the pressure that followed has also increased.The foundation of its own ruling power is not stable,the domestic political situation is unstable,the illegality of relevant policies and measures may be condemned,the condemnation of all parties,and the change of public attitudes.The refugee policy of the Italian populist government is characterized by extremes and immaturity,the pursuit of short-term interests,and departure from the traditional principles of EU respect for human rights.It reflects the return of nationalism and populism,and is a severe test of the EU's response to the refugee crisis.It is also a strong challenge to the process of European integration.
