The historical process of contemporary China since the reform and opening up is also a "tremendous historical change" for western countries and even the whole world.China's great achievements and profound social changes make contemporary China more and more the focus of American society and academia.Among the American scholars who are concerned about the development path of contemporary China, there are a group of sinologists whose career is to study China.Ezra F.Vogel, known as “Mr China”,is one of them.Ezra F.Vogel has been focusing on China since the 1960 s,especially on the study of China's reform and opening up.He has written a number of books including?Canton under communism???One step ahead in China: Guangdong under reform???Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China?.Ezra F.Vogel paid so much attention to China's reform and opening up,which was caused by a strong practical need, and was related to the inherent changes in the development of Chinese studies in the United States,as well as his own academic opportunities. His previous studies on China and the modernization of some east Asian countries have laid a good foundation for his studies on China's reform and opening up.China's reform and opening up is mainly because of the dual needs of history and reality. No matter it is the profound expectation for prosperity,or the strong enterprising mentality generated in the comparison,China's reform is imperative, and the heroes created by The Times lead China's reform and opening up.He believed that China's reform and opening-up not only realized profound changes in national governance and social institutions, but also greatly enhanced China's international status. The success of China's reform and opening-up lies in its strong centralized leadership, its adoption of the "modern meritocracy" model, its adherence to the principle of pragmatic and gradual reform, and its efforts to create a peaceful and stable environment at home and abroad. In his view,in the process of deepening reform and opening up,China is also faced with the arduous challenges of maintaining the authority of the regime, promoting anti-corruption construction and reasonably determining the limits of freedom. His research on China's reform and opening up has distinct characteristics. He hopes to improve the understanding of contemporary China while serving the political development of the United States. He made a continuous depth tracking from point to surface; He is good at mining and using new historical materials, often using contrast to summarize the commonness and individuality; He achieved a subtle fusion of theoretical analysis and historical presentation.Like any book, there are inevitable limitations. As far as its limitation is concerned, the philosophical basis of China's guiding ideology is pragmatism, the relationship between Deng Xiaoping theory and MAO Zedong thought is divided, and the changes in Chinese politics are explained by the mode of factional struggle.Nevertheless, his research on China's reform and opening up still brings us many useful inspirations and reflections. We should draw on the useful experience of foreign scholars in Chinese studies, including the unique academic understanding, the emphasis on the collection and use of oral historical materials, and the strengthening of historical perspective. On the basis of understanding the historical background and research purposes of the opinions of foreign scholars,we should try to solve the generation gap between China and foreign countries and promote mutual learning and understanding between China and foreign countries. In exchange, the theory of China is presented in the form of the story of China's rise, better promote the globalization of China's voice.
