A Study On The Referendum System In Taiwan

Since the creation of the referendum system with democracy and freedom as its core values,it has played a certain role in promoting the implementation and development of direct civil rights.However,it's also a "double-edged sword" and will have many drawbacks.In recent years,there have been numerous cases of referendums in Taiwan.In this regard,this article has carried out specific research on the referendum system in Taiwan,striving to show the overall picture of the referendum system in Taiwan,and in-depth thinking about the status of the referendum system in Taiwan.It's found that the emergence and development of the referendum system in Taiwan has complicated social and historical roots through the literature review.The first part of this article is to sort out the history of the referendum system on the island.The second part is to analyze the specific composition of the referendum system in Taiwan.The third part discusses the practice of referendum on the island,and the fourth part is to discuss the democratic nature of the referendum system in Taiwan.Based on the analysis and interpretation of the referendum system in Taiwan,the author finds that the emergence of the "referendum" claim on the island is "congenitally unhealthy",and the development of remarks is closely linked to the "Taiwan independence" claim.The "referendum law" on the island has strong political factors.In order to consolidate its power,the DPP makes temporary adjustments to its "Taiwan independence" proposition.The referendum system lacking the color of "Taiwan independence" is established only after reaching the greatest consensus.On the one hand,the adoption of the "referendum law" amendment shows the adjustment and development of the system at different stages.On the other hand,it also reflects the unstable state of the referendum on the island,which reveals the serious political struggles of political parties in Taiwan.Although residents' participation in public decision-making has increased during the implementation of the referendum in Taiwan,it has also exposed certain problems at the same time.The original intention of the referendum system is to make up for the shortcomings of the representative system.However,the referendum system on the island isn't scientific and democratic in nature in the development of the referendum system in Taiwan.The referendum system on the island has been endowed with a strong background of political party competition.The DPP,which consistently advocates "Taiwan independence",repeatedly plays with the pan-blue camp to achieve its political goals.The referendum system on the island comes into being in this context.The vicious competition of political parties,the limited rationality of citizens,and the biased spread of the media make the outcome of the referendum proposal unpredictable.It has political consequences such as political polarization,ethnic conflict,and cross-strait deadlock.The intent of the referendum system on the island is to give Taiwan residents the opportunity to express their opinions directly on the island's public affairs and exercise their democratic rights in accordance with the law.However,the referendum system in Taiwan is merely a cloak of “democracy”and its implementation status is contrary to the original intention of developing the referendum system.
