Based on the review and summary of related mainstream definitions and theories, the concept of "strategic coercion" is re-defined by this dissertation as a key analytical framework. It argues there are three sets of approaches adopted by the statecraft, namely, the forceful threat approach, the non-forceful threat approach and the non-threat approach. This dissertation also sorts main elements affecting the result of strategic coercion into three groups, namely, context element, tactic element and perception element.Based on the review of the mainland's evolving policy towards Taiwan after the end of Cold War, this dissertation explores how the mainland has used this statecraft in preventing and containing independence. It especially focus on how strategic coercion is explored to oppose "referendum on bidding for the United Nations in the name of 'Taiwan' " initiated by Taiwan authority during 2007 to 2008. In order to evaluate the efficiency, function and limits of "strategic coercion" in this case and make it more effective in campaigning against Taiwan separatists in future, it analyzes approaches adopted by the mainland and elements affecting result of the statecraft .The dissertation argues that, when a nation's core interest and common interest of the whole international society are overlapped, strategic coercion is a preferable statecraft which is relatively more economic and effective. To maximize the benefit of this statecraft, the specific approaches adopted could and should be diversified. In the case study, this dissertation argues that the Chinese central government applies various approaches, and makes a wise synthetic strategy on the basis of good context conditions. As a Result, strategic coercion successfully helped defeat the referendum. While recognizing the value of strategic coercion in preventing and defending against secession movement on the island, we had to understand its limitation, especially in terms of promoting unification of Taiwan. To aim at achieving peaceful reunification in the long run, a more comprehensive strategy is necessary, with stressing on both soft power and economic and social development on the mainland.
