Along with the advancement of the new curriculum reform and the implementation of quality-oriented education, diverse learning approaches, such as “autonomous, cooperative, and exploratory learning”,call for the emergence of the diversification of teaching approaches. There arises Peer Instruction.Peer Instruction,(referred to as “PI”)is a teaching approach, based on the learning tasks, focusing on the students' autonomous learning and the teacher-students and student-student cooperation and exploration. The inner motivation,“learning from teaching” has effectively removed the disadvantages of the traditional instilling teaching. It puts students first in class, maximizes the students' learning initiative and creativity, improves the learning efficiency of students, cultivates the students' social ability and generates a positive effect on their academic achievement and the affective domain. It is based on the theory of constructivism,cross-functional scaffolding interaction theory, learning pyramid theory and the cognitive refinement theory. And it has these characteristics, namely, assumption of roles, complementary relationships, equal status, proper guiding and instant feedback. The participants in the thesis are the students who have little differences in academic achievement in grade five from two classes. The same mathematics content was delivered in both classes, one class with traditional teaching approach and the other one with PI approach.By observing the class performances of the students in both classes, interviewing the students and the teachers, and comparing the test scores of both classes, the thesis explores and analyzes the effectiveness and the problems of PI and finally proposes some corresponding solutions to the problems arising from PI process. The thesis has five parts. The first part explains the background and the significance of the thesis, reviews the current researches on PI both at home and abroad and introduces the outline of the thesis;the second part introduces the definition, features, theoretic basis, educational concept and the multiple forms of PI;the third part is about the conduct of PI in maths classes in primary school based on the multiple forms of PI;In the fourth part, the results of PI is analyzed from two perspectives, the acquired achievement and the existing problems;the fifth part proposes corresponding suggestions based on the results of PI conducting.Any teaching organizing form has its limitations. The PI research in the new era still has many problems, such as time-consuming in the initial stage, being slow in progressing and being conflict with the current courses. However,it integrates autonomous, cooperative and exploratory learning in practice, identifying the right entry point for the implementation of the teaching concept----“putting students first” in our country. It will definitely supplement the current teaching organizing forms in China and become the indispensable part in the future curriculum reform.
