The development of curriculum resources is the most important issue to be solved in the localization of STEM education.Each subject is taught independently from each other in China's middle schools which is not conducive to the cultivation of talents.This study focuses on the compiling of STEM reading for students of 9th grade with the aim to compiling a reading of STEM education which can stimulate students'interests in science learning,broaden students' scientific views and cultivate students' problem-solving ability and innovative spirit.At the same time,it is hoped that this research can provide reference for future research and compiling of STEM reading,and lay the foundation for the realization of the localization of STEM education.Firstly,this study reviews the development of STEM education and related research,based on which the direction and content of the research are clarified.Secondly,the overall goal of this research is to compile a reading book for students of 9th grade based on STEM education.This study starts with the issues of energy crisis,resource waste,environmentalpollution,and disaster prevention and reduction.It takes the two themes of "the magical journey of energy" and "the wisdom of taking fire,the safe use of fire and the scientific fire extinguishing" as example.The content focues on dealing with a practical problem and designing a related project.The reading includes six columns,which are "pleasant reading world","day by day","discovery disclosure","I Can Do It","brainstorming" and "professional link".Each column is with different intentions,but they all reflect the STEM education ideas from different perspectives.According to the characteristics of STEM education in cultivatinge students' spirit of innovation and ability to solve problems,many questions are raised in the reading,which intends to inspire students to think and guide them to construct knowledge independently.Then,it investigates the quality and usage of reading.84 students from 9th grade and 6 middle school science teachers are the research subjects in this research,questionnaires to the students and interviews with teachers are conducted to make empirical research.The results show that the reading is readable and interesting;the content of the reading is socially;the design of the reading embodies activity;the reading is beneficial to students' learning;the reading can improve students'understanding of the importance of STEM and stimulate students'interests in learning science;it has cultivated the innovative spirit and problem-solving ability of students to a certain extent.The reading basically achieved the desired results.Finally,on the basis of this research,it puts forward several suggestions for the compilation of STEM readings:special attention should be paid to the socialization of the reading' topics and the activity design of the reading.Besides,the penetration of vocational education and the visual effect of the reading still deserve our attention.
