The Study Of College Students' Self Presentation In The Social Media

With the increase of social media users,the intrinsic links between social media and "self" are getting increasingly closer.It is the diversity and convenience of online social platform that makes more and more college students present and decorate their self-cognition by self-portraits.But there is few research on this subject in China.From the perspective of semiotics theory,this paper focuses on the interactive symbol in the process when students beautify their selfies.It attempts to reveal the intension and pattern of this interactive process through the difference before and after selfie modification,and find out how they present "self".In order to know more about social contact of selfie beautification among college students,the study issued 488 valid questionnaires to depict college students' behavior of "beautify pictures".Then the author issued a H5 solicitation to collect 85 photos,including 36 students' before and after selfie beautification which posts on social media.Based on the self-concept theory of William James and visual grammatical framework proposed by Kress and Van Leeuwen,the paper analyzed the symbols reflected in the selfies and unscrambled the subtle differences between the before and after selfie beautification from the angle of "representational meaning","interactive meaning","compositional meaning" through qualitative research methods.Finally,the author concluded three dimensionality of self from the behavior of selfie beautification——material self,social self and spiritual self.The thesis generalizes the methods and patterns in which college students present material self,social self and spiritual self by selfie beautification.It finds that the material self shown in the process of selfie beautification is more like a kind of complementary self,the social self is more like a kind of recognized self,and the spiritual self is more like a kind of supplementary self.
