Objective To respectively observe the intervention effects of health Qigong Baduanjin and static resistance strength training on undergraduates with sub-health state neck discomfort, and to explore the comprehensive improvements of both kinesitherapies on the clinical symptoms, psychological states and quality of life of patients with neck discomfort.Meanwhile, the therapeutic mechanism would be analyzed aiming to explore the safe and effective means for preventing cervical spondylosis, which could provide theoretical and practical foundation for the promotion and application of kinesitherapy. Methods 40 undergraduates(including 28 males and 12 females)with sub-health state neck discomfort were randomly divided into Baduanjin group and resistance group at the ratio of 1:1 for 12 weeks of Qigong Baduanjin exercise and neck static resistance strength training, respectively. Moreover, changes in physiological function, psychological state and quality of life in both groups were evaluated before and after intervention, with the Neck Disability Index(NDI)score reflecting neck disability level,Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)score, neck Range of Motion(ROM)score and Quality of Life-Short form(SF-36)score as the evaluation indexes.Results1.Intragroup comparison with before intervention suggested that difference in neck VAS score between Qigong group and resistance group was statistically significant after intervention(P<0.01);difference in NDI score after intervention was statistically significant(P<0.01);and cervical range of motion(ROM)at 5 directions, namely, anteflexion and backward extension, right lateroflexion,as well as left and right rotation were remarkably greater(P<0.05).Physical component summary(PCS)and mental component summary(MCS)scores had notably improved(P<0.01),respectively;and difference in health change(HT)dimension was of statistical significance(P<0.05).Meanwhile,scores in 6 dimensions, namely, physiological function(PF),role physical(RP),general health(GH),vitality(VT),social function(SF)and role emotional(RE),in health Qigong group after intervention were higher than those before intervention(P<0.05).Scores in three dimensions, namely,VT,SF and mental health(MH)in resistance group after intervention were notably higher than those before intervention(P<0.05).2.Intergroup comparison after intervention indicated that greater changes in cervical ROM at right lateroflexion and left rotation direction could be achieved in resistance group than in health Qigong group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Moreover,changes in GH in health Qigong group were more prominent than those in resistance group(P<0.05).Conclusions1 Both regular Qigong-Baduanjin exercise and neck static resistance training can effectively improve the sub-health state neck discomfort symptoms in undergraduates, mitigate pain, alleviate neck limitation of motion and reduce neck dysfunction.2 Both kinesitherapies can enhance the self-health satisfaction among undergraduates, promote their vitality and improve their overall quality of life.3 Baduanjin is a systemic health nurturing and body building exercise, which applies breathing and mindfulness with exercise to regulate the central nervous system function. It can better regulate the positive emotions and promote the favorable minds in undergraduates,so as to promote their general health levels.4 Both Baduanjin exercise and static resistance training display favorable safety, which can be actively promoted as the strategy for preventing and treating cervical spondylosis.
