The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of caring training for improving the autonomy of institutionalized elderly residents.The study got a nursing home of the six institutions of the elderly for the object,and assessed their autonomy needs through observation and interviews.On the basis of the theory of caring,the paper selects ten caregivers including managers,nurses,care workers and volunteers,and then the paper designs the care and training from the four dimensions of concept,knowledge,technology and action,uses the single object experiment to study the design of the elderly and evaluates with Perceived Enactment of Autonomy Scale(PEAS).Answering the following research questions:What are the autonomy needs and expectations of the institutional elderly as a result of institutional care?How can social workers design and implement caring training for institutional caregivers?Whether caring training can improve institutions autonomy?The conclusions are following:1.During the period of caring training,the perceived autonomy of institutional elderly people improved significantly.After the caring training,the average scores of the perceived autonomy of the elderly dropped while there was stability and caring training had short-term effectiveness.2.The training designed around the four dimensions of philosophy,knowledge,technology and action to improve caring ability of nursing staff effectively.3.The autonomy of the elderly improved in three aspects:freedom,individuality and independence.The care model moved from constraint to care.The caregivers transformed from managers and supervisors to supporters and helpers.The elderly are one of the most important targets of social service intervention.In this study2 social workers are involved in caring training to enhance the autonomy of the elderly.And the researcher hopes to enrich evidence-based research as the original research of social work for practitioners and prospective researchers.
