The Differences Between Urban And Rural Areas Of Intergenerational Support By Chinese Families

With the accelerated aging of the population in China,research on elderly population is becoming more and more extensive and in-depth.Intergenerational relations have become an important dimension in the research on family and aging.Intergenerational support is a very important part of intergenerational relations research.Most of the existing studies have studied the intergenerational support of urban or rural areas separately,and some treats all parents or all children as a homogenous group to study the influencing factors of intergenerational support while ignoring the heterogeneity in the group.Regarding this situation,from the perspective of urban-rural differences,using the latest data released by China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2015,to study the economic support and care support among generations.The place of residence is divided to urban and rural,intergenerational support status is compared between the parents group and children group.As the research shows that intergenerational support in China is generally a two-way interaction between parents and children.Family wealth is a process of mutual mobility between parents and children's families.Parents and children support each other in economic and care.The total amount of intergenerational economic support between urban and rural households varies greatly.The economic support in urban areas is greater than that for rural areas.From the perspective of the factors affecting economic support,the factors that impact of urban parents on their children were studied.It shows that the economic support was affected more by the children's variables in urban areas.The economic support of rural parents to children is more affected by the parents' variables.The economic support of urban children to their parents is mainly depending on the children's factors,and the transfer of rural children to parents is more depends on parental factors.From the view of care support,rural parents support their children more than their urban counterparts.This is reflected in the fact that rural parents help their children take care of grandchildren for more time,and mainly cause by their education,participation,and marital status of children.
