A Research On The Singlehood Phenomenon Of Baiyi People At Liuhe Township,heqing County,Dali

In China at present,the social and academic understanding of the phenomenon of single and marriage squeeze presents a binary structure situation of gender antagonism.That is,single men are stuck in the rural communities at the bottom of society,mainly passive.Single female distribution in urban society,mainly active.The phenomenon of single women in Baiyi rural communities of Yi ethnic group in Heqing county Dali has raised doubts on the dual structure.Therefore,the study on the phenomenon of single women in Baiyi county is helpful to improve the single people studies in China.Besides,the focus of academia on the phenomenon of single people is mainly based on two approaches.First,the macro approach interpreted from the perspective of macro demographic structure,and second,micro approach,single research individuals from the perspective of family and clan.In this thesis,I try to interpret the phenomenon of singlehood via bridging the differences between the macro and micro approaches.In this paper,I will argue the singlehood phenomenon of Baiyi people is a result of multiple reasons with the material of Baiyi which I have found in the filed.In Baiyi society,male singles are mainly distributed in the lower age group under 40 years old,while female singles present a spindle-shaped structure with the middle age group between 40 and 50 years old is the peak period and decreasing on both sides.According to my research,the phenomenon of singlehood for male and female in Baiyi society has different reasons.Male singlehood and marriage squeeze is mainly caused by the female "marry out" to an outsider and the resule of an imbalance of gender structure.On the one hand,the female singlehood phenomenon in Baiyi society is mainly the result that female did not participate in the male labor migration wave during the period from 1990 to 2000.On the other hand,the tension betxween the modernity of men and the tradition of women in the early stage of Baiyi's social and cultural changes with the employment economy has created the phenomenon of single women in Baiyi society.Also,the special cultural characteristics of Baiyi society,such as the non-familial nature of marriage and the independent community's less evaluation on the inclusiveness of single women's marriage oppression and the kinship reciprocity single pension mechanism,provide the cultural inclusiveness for Baiyi society.
