Since the 1980 s,China has been experiencing an unbalance of sex ratio at birth,and the influence continues today.In recent years,long-term unbalance of sex ratio at birth has led to a series of problems: the number of men in the marriage market is far greater than that of women;some men can not find the right objects for marriage;marriage squeeze problem become even more violent.With the development of urbanization and Internet economy,people's ideology is greatly influenced by multiple values and becomes more and more rational and utilitarian,which causes rural men with low economic and social status become the object of marriage squeeze.Rural men with low economic and social status can only seek to break through the dilemma of marriage squeeze by lowering their standards of selecting their mate and improving their physical conditions.It not only causes great mental and economical pressure to rural young men and their families,but also leads to a bloom of older unmarried young men,which caused a series of social and family problems.Based on marriage market theory,the thesis takes Z Town of Y County in eastern Henan as an example to explore the problem of marriage squeeze.Using literature and case study method,the writer explores the problem from three dimensions: gender ratio imbalance,view of mate-selecting and marriage payment.Starting from the historical evolution of sex ratio at birth and current situation of sex ratio in Z town,the thesis discusses the current degree of marriage squeeze in Z Town and analyzes the causes of imbalance in gender ratio and its influence,and forecasts the future marriage squeeze.Secondly,the writer discusses how the view of spouse-selection influences rural male marriage squeeze from four aspects: Gradient effect in spouse-selection;Autonomy in spouse-selection;Material gain in spouse-selection and the wish of comparing with the higher.Then the author introduces the rural marriage custom and marriage payment history in Z Town.The author also analyzes the current situation of Z town marriage market,the high marriage payments,marriage strategy selection and the impact on the local marriage market.Finally,the thesis makes a comprehensive analysis on gender ratio imbalance,mate selection and marriage payment,and explores the interrelationships among them and how they eventually lead to marriage squeezing in rural males.In the end,the solution to the problem of marriage squeeze in rural areas is discussed.
