The main function of cognitive control is to ensure that behavior and mission objectives are consistent in the face of conflict scenarios. So it is also called conflict control.Cognitive control is extremely important when people need to overcome their own automated behaviors or make the fastest and correct decisions possible in unfamiliar situations. There are two measures of cognitive control ability, namely conflict effect and conflict adaptation effect.Studies have showed that ordinary children had conflict effects and conflict adaptation effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children with intellectual disabilities whose development in thinking, attention, and memory are significantly behind ordinary children will also have conflict effects and conflict adaptation effects. This study used the classic arrow Flanker task to examine the cognitive control ability of children with intellectual disabilities. In Experiment 1,we examined whether children with intellectual disabilities had conflict effects and whether the differences with ordinary children were significant. The results showed that there was a conflict effect between ordinary children and children with intellectual disabilities under conflict tasks. The response under the congruent trial was significantly faster than the response under the incongruent trial, indicating that there was a stable conflict effect. The difference of conflict effect between ordinary children and children with intellectual disabilities was significant. The conflict effect of children with intellectual disabilities was significantly greater than that of ordinary children, indicating that children with intellectual disabilities were more susceptible to interference from unrelated information. In the face of cognitive conflicts, more cognitive resources were needed, and the response time was longer than ordinary children. In Experiment 2,we examined whether children with intellectual disabilities had conflict adaptation effects. The results showed that the interaction between the previous trials and the current trials was significantly for ordinary children, when the previous trial is an incongruent trial and the current trial is an incongruent trial, the response is significantly faster than the previous trial is a congruent trial and the current trial is an incongruent trial, indicating that the ordinary children had significant conflict adaptation effects. The repeated measures analysis of variance showed that children with intellectual disabilities did not have conflict adaptation effects, indicating that the consistency of previous trials had no significant effect on the current conflict tasks of children with intellectual disabilities, and children with intellectual disabilities had poor cognitive flexibility. In general, children with intellectual disabilities have lower cognitive control ability and lack of cognitive flexibility than ordinary children. This may be due to mental impairment and slow cognitive processing. In education,we should adopt suitable teaching content for children with intellectual disabilities. So we can create an easy-to-understand teaching environment, provide educational support, compensate for cognitive control deficiencies, and promote learning effectiveness.
