TPR(total physical response)method,also known as the systemic reaction method in China,was proposed by James J.Asher,an American psychologist,in 1960 s.After being developed for more than half a century,it was proved by the second language teachers with their practices of teaching that it is an effective method for the second language teaching for the primary school students.However,it works well with teaching some simple words,while there are shortages of teaching complex words.Some very good teaching results achieved after the author integrated the American sign-language gestures into TPR method in the Chinese classes for the U.S.K-5(kindergarten to the fifth grade)beginners.And after a deeper theoretical research and class practice,the author figured out that the limitation of TPR method for teaching complex words is broken through after integrating the American sign-language gestures into vocabulary teaching with TPR method,and the scope of using for the TPR method was greatly expanded in vocabulary teaching,some vocabularies were also analyzed and compiled which are suitable for the primary level teaching of Chinese vocabularies.After searching in CNKI.net,there was no research related to using the sign-language gestures during the TPR teaching process,thus the research of integrating the American sign-language into the TPR teaching method is groundbreaking.In addition,class examples of the author are practical significant references for the first-line primary Chinese teachers for the K-5 learners.Based on the author's relevant research in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and combined with her actual teaching practice in the United States,This paper shows how to integrate asl gesture into TPR teaching method for Chinese teaching through teaching design,and discusses how to break through the limitations of TPR teaching method by integrating asl gesture into TPR teaching method.This paper consists of three parts,as follows:Chapter one: Introduction.This part briefly expounds the background,innovation and significance of the topic,research methods and domestic research on TPR teaching method.Chapter two: The integration of American sign language gesture into TPR teaching method.This part expounds the concept,teaching steps,theoretical basis of TPR and integration of asl gesture into TPR teaching method.Chapter three: Application research of American sign language gesture and TPR teaching method in K5 elementary Chinese teaching.This part expounds the K5 elementary Chinese teaching in the United States,the effectiveness of asl gesture integration into TPR teaching method,the teaching design of asl gesture integration into TPR teaching method,and how to break through the limitations of TPR teaching method.Conclusion: the author integrates American sign language gestures into TPR teaching method,presents and analyzes real classroom teaching cases,sorts out some words suitable for primary Chinese learners,and explains their use strategies.Due to the limited ability of the author,there are still many aspects of research not thorough enough.
