In terms of its connotation,general education has the characteristics of integrating knowledge,which is an essentially education integrating various social learning resources.It should also be expected to be the education that can guide students to contact the knowledge and combine with social context,so as to help students acquire wisdom.Education has a very significant traditional feature in Taiwan’s universities,that is,it operates under the wisdom and management of education competent departments.From the school organization structure to the course type structure and even the content,as well as the teacher’s salary and student’s tuition fee,all are subject to the restrictions of running a school that can significantly reflected in their actual education activity planning and curriculum design.Through previous studies and surveys of some universities in Taiwan,the author found that the fundamental difficulty in promoting general education was closely related to the fragmentary credit structure commonly seen in courses of various universities.Another structural limitation of general education in Taiwan is that college students are assigned to a specific department or class as soon as they enter the university.In this paper,some common problems in the implementation of general education in Taiwan universities and their fundamental limitations and possible directions to overcome these limitations are discussed,and four suggestions are put forward to help the future development of general education.In this paper,some common problems in the implementation of general education in Taiwan universities and their fundamental limitations and possible directions to exceed these limitations are discussed.It is found that the problems of general education in Taiwan universities mainly include four aspects:the development mode of general education in Taiwan is restricted by the local education authorities;General education in Taiwan universities prefers the cultivation of lofty ideals and perfect personality,which is difficult to realize.General education in Taiwan universities emphasizes the cultivation of professional knowledge and skills and the fragmentation and marginalization of education in general education in Taiwan universities.In view of these problems,the author also discussed and explored,and put forward four Suggestions:the construction of hierarchical curriculum structure without department boundaries;Play the function of general education to integrate social context;Give full play to the function of general education in integrating social resources context;The function of knowledge catalyst and intelligence cultivation of general knowledge education should be brought into play.The author expects that the research done in this paper will be helpful to the future development of general education. |
