Math gender stereotype refers to a common and stable concept that people think men are better suited to learning mathematics than women. As the most common and typical gender stereotype,it not only directly threatens women’s mathematics academic performance, but also has a negative impact on women’s academic efficacy and self-esteem.This is a serious challenge for women’s harmonious development,self-realization and even mental health in society. Therefore, the research on the mechanism and influencing factors of math gender stereotype is of great significance.A large number of previous studies have found that math gender stereotype has a close relationship with many negative academic behaviors. In order to integrate the potential mediators of stereotypes and negative behaviors.Smith(2004)combs the previous studies and proposes the stereotyped task engagement process model, which considers stereotypes to lead to the avoidance goal and negative coping strategies of stigmatized groups in learning activities. Then the avoidance goal and negative coping strategies lead to negative emotional experiences and negative academic behaviors, which in turn lead to worse academic performance. At the same time,Smith also believes that boys who influenced by math gender stereotype will tend to choose performance goals. This study based on this model, assumes that in the field of mathematics, math gender stereotype will make girls negatively affected by stereotypes in the process of mathematics learning, and thus girls prefer to choose avoidance goal, choose the self-handicapping strategy, and then lead to academic burnout behavior. In this study, the Chinese version of the math gender stereotype scale, the four-point achievement goal scale, the Chinese version of the self-handicapping scale, and the Youth academic burnout scale were used to study a total of 1170 students in thejunior and senior high school. The study has researched the current situation and relationship of math gender stereotype, achievement goal orientation,self-handicapping and academic burnout in the field of mathematics, and further discusses the sequence mediating effect of achievement goal and self-handicapping on the influence of math gender stereotype on academic burnout, hoping to provide theoretical basis to effectively reduce the negative academic behavior of high school students,to stimulate students’ interest in learning and improve their learning efficiency and to promote the development of mental health of middle school students. The results shows:(1)Middle school students have math gender stereotype,self-handicapping and academic burnout, but the overall situation is not serious. There is significant gender difference in the middle school students math gender stereotype, and the male students are stronger than the female students;the academic burnout phenomenon of the middle school students has higher scores in the low self-efficacy and emotional exhaustion dimensions, and the girls are slightly higher than boys. The academic burnout phenomenon increase with the grade, and the first grade in senior high school is the summit.(2)The achievement goal of middle school students is good overall. They tend approach goal more, less performance avoidance goal, and the score of boys is higher on the approach goals, the score of girls is higher on the avoidance goals, and the scores of each dimension decrease with the grade.(3)Math gender stereotype of girls is significantly positively correlated with performance avoidance goal and self-handicapping,and positively correlated with academic burnout and its three dimensions, and negatively correlated with approach goal, and not significantly correlated with mastery avoidance goal.Math gender stereotype of boys is significantly negatively correlated with mastery avoidance goal, and not significantly correlated with approach goal, and significantly positively correlated with performance avoidance goal,self-handicapping and academic burnout, but not significantly correlated with low self-efficacy.(4)In the field of mathematics, the achievement avoidance goal and self-handicapping of girls have a sequence mediating effect on the effect math gender stereotype have on academic burnout, and the male math gender stereotype academic burnout has a direct effect, and the mediating effect is not significant.
