Learning burnout, a common phenomenon existed in teenage students in our country, has become a serious problem that teachers and parents should face. We should pay attention to it, because it has a negative influence on the study and healthy psychology of the students. We define the learning burnout as a kind of comprehensive negative psychological situation which is associated with learning. This situation is characterized by:Individual feel tired and exhausted in the learning process; lose enthusiasm in learning and has a negative attitude on school work; acquire no achievability but more of a frustration in studies. In general, it mainly shown in three aspects:physical and mental exhaustion, academic alienation and lack of sense of accomplishment. Some studies have showed that achievement goal orientation and self-handicapping have respectively great impact on learning burnout. With 838 (available data 762) study subjects of the first grade and second grade junior and senior high school student, this study has explored the influences that the achievement goal orientation and self-handicapping in teenage students have on their learning burnout by applying the 2x2 achievement goal orientation scale, Chinese version self-handicapping scale, teenage learning burnout scale; and further discussed the mediating effect that self-handicapping has on the role of achievement goal orientation plays in teenage learning burnout. Then in accordance with the results of the study, we could put forward the corresponding educational suggestions and the results of study that enrich research achievement in the three aspects of achievement goal orientation, self-handicapping and learning burnout, in order to provide some help for reducing or preventing the level of learning burnout in teenage students. This study gets the following conclusions by verifying the hypothesis:1. In teenage students, gender has no significant differences in learning burnout score, emotional exhaustion factor, achievement goal orientation and self-handicapping; but boys may be more prone to have academic alienation symptoms than girls, girls are more likely to experience low sense of achievement than boys. For different grades, the learning burnout situation in senior students is more serious than junior students; junior students are more prone to have mastery-approach goal orientation which is a positive goal orientation, while senior students are more prone to have performance avoid goal orientation which is a negative goal orientation; second year students are more likely to take self-handicapping strategies compared to the first year students in junior and senior students.2. Mastery approach goal orientation and performance approach goal orientation all can predict learning burnout and self-handicapping in a significantly negative way. Individual, who hold high score of mastery avoid and performance avoid goal orientation, use less self-handicapping strategies and is not easy to have learning burnout. On the contrary, mastery avoid and performance avoid goal orientation all can predict them in a significantly positive way. Students, who hold high score of avoid goal orientation, are prone to use self-handicapping strategies and have a serious learning burnout situation. It is to say that students are easy to have learning burnout when they utilize self-handicapping frequently.3. Self-handicapping in teenage students has the mediating effect on the effects achievement goal orientation have on learning burnout. Mastery approach and performance approach goal orientation can negatively impact learning burnout in a direct way, and also can impact it through affecting self-handicapping. Meanwhile, mastery avoid and performance avoid goal orientation can positively impact learning burnout directly, and can indirectly impact it through affecting self-handicapping.
