In order to adapt to the development of China's economy and society informatization and to meet the increasingly urgent needs of high-level applied talents as Library and Information Studies(LIS)develops,the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council of China officially set up the master's degree in library and information studies(hereinafter referred to as MLIS).Although MLIS education has been practiced for many years and the scale of education has gradually expanded,MLIS education is still in the development stage,many problems have yet to be solved.Scholars in LIS have done relevant research on MLIS education program,practical teaching,faculties and curriculum,professional core competence,etc.,but few studies about the students,ability structure have been done.Therefore,this author combines the theory and empirical research,takes the curriculum of MLIS education program in China as the research object and conducts studies about the current situation of MLIS curriculum as well as the ability and knowledge structure that MLIS students need.The author expects the universities to optimize and adjust to the curriculum system and deepen the reform,therefore improving the teaching quality,the students' comprehensive capacity and achieving the goal of cultivating high-level applied talents for the society.The thesis illustrates the research from two aspects.Firstly,it investigates and analyzes the current situation of MLIS curriculum nationwide including the overall coverage,the structure,the content and the proportion,and compares it with the iSchooIs Alliance---an international association of information colleges composed of information colleges from more than 60 universities in more than a dozen countries established in 2004;Secondly,the author conducts research on the ability and knowledge structure of MLIS students by literature research,interview and mathematical statistics.The study of ability structure is based on the Competency Theory to establish the ability factor indicators for MLIS students.By interview method,the various factor indicators are revised and supplemented,and the ability structure system that MLIS students need in the future work is obtained.The study of knowledge structure is based on the professional core curriculum in the National MLIS Graduate Guidance Training Program.Through the questionnaires from the perspectives of practice and work among students and LIS workers,research on the knowledge structure of MLIS students is done and a knowledge structure system is built.Finally,this author hopes to provide a valuable reference for the construction of the MLIS curriculum system.
