With the development of globalization and the implementation of urbanization,individual plurilingualism is becoming more common.Individual plurilingual competence plays an important role in promoting individual's development,maintaining national unity and ensuring national security.The investigating results of our citizens' language levels and their multilingual planning situation can be used to provide both suggestions for improving people's multilingual awareness and a reliable basis for formulating appropriate language and education policies in China.Based on the questionnaire,this study investigates Beijing urban elementary and middle school students' multilingual levels and their parents' language awareness,management and practice,especially parents' feedback towards multiple foreign language courses in school.Results show that:1.students have a high level of Mandarin and English competence,an average but uneven level of Chinese dialects;2.Parents' recognition of language value descends from Mandarin,English,non-English foreign languages to Chinese dialects and minority languages.Parents also prefer several traditionally widely-spread languages-English,French,German,Japanese and Spanish;3.Parents of different genders,occupations,academic qualifications and family income differ in language awareness.Specifically,parents'multilingual awareness is positively correlated with language learning experiences,and is a negatively correlated with education level and family income;4.In actual life,97%families choose Mandarin as the preferred communicating language;5.70.7%of parents were satisfied with school non-English foreign language courses.Suggestions were made to promote people's multilingual awareness.On one hand,raise people's awareness of the value of multilingualism based on the joint effort of the nation,schools,and the public.On the other hand,provide people with convenient opportunities to learn languages from a technical perspective.
