At the end of the 20th century,the Internet gradually rose in China,and the online distance education with the online as tool began to appear.It was studied that the learning motivation of students working on distance education shows the characteristics of weak internal motivation and strong external motivation.Students pay more attention to the external learning results,and the learning is more utilitarian.The study will guide the teaching design of online distance education with the ARCS Motivation Model and it tries to improve students' learning motivation by optimizing course content and improving teaching activities.The study introduces the related literature on the learning motivation of the students in the online distance education,tells readers the current situation of the students' learning motivation,summarizes scholars' method in improving the motivation,and then determines the research direction of this paper as:the application of the ARCS Motivation model in teaching design.Then summarize the elements and design process of ARCS Motivation Model,which lays theoretical foundation for developing teaching strategies in the future.To develop and design a course,student analysis is a key step.This study investigates and analyzes the student's learning status.The author selected some students of "computer science and technology" major working on online distance education as the research object,and handed out questionnaire among them in order to know the current learning situation of the research object.After mastering the situation of students,the paper shows the strategies of teaching design based on the ARCS Motivation Model.With the theory of ARCS Motivation Model and the learning situation of distance education students combined,the paper presents teaching strategies that can be used in the teaching design of distance education from four aspects of ARCS.Then apply ARCS motivation model in curriculum development,with the course—the Foundation of Web Page Development as case study.And the model involves learning guide,course video,quiz,learning tasks,learning activities and other aspects.And the paper also shows the application of ARCS Motivation Mode in course video in detail with the section "Understanding Web Documents" as an example.Finally,the implementation plan and analyze the experimental effect.In this study,two groups of students,experimental group and control group,were selected to study the course developed and designed on the basis of ARCS Motivation Model,and the previous course respectively.After a semester's teaching experiment,the students' emotional motivation level and academic performance level were analyzed before the end of the semester.It was found that the data of the experimental group and the control group showed significant changes,so the effectiveness of ARCS motivation model in network distance education teaching was verified.This study verifies the effectiveness of ARCS motivation model in stimulating student motivation and improving student performance,and summarizes the instructional design strategies in the attention,related,confidence and satisfaction fields,and provides new ideas for the teaching practice in the field of online distance education.
