At present, there are still large differences in the level of economic development in various regions of China. In the critical period of transforming the development mode, optimizing the economic structure, and transforming the growth momentum,we must promote the transformation of the industry from investment-driven to innovation-driven,and rely on collaborative innovation to drive economic development,in order to provide the driving force for China's economic transformation. The demographic factor is an important factor affecting the level of innovation. With the changes of time and economic environment,China's population structure has also undergone significant changes, which will inevitably have a certain impact on China's regional innovation capability. This paper took 30 provinces(excluding Tibet)as the research object, and established a spatial econometric model based on the differences in regional innovation capabilities and spatial correlation, and studied the impact of population structure on regional innovation capabilities. The main research contents are as follows:Firstly, this paper summarized the research results of population structure and regional innovation ability at home and abroad, described the research content and methods, and defined the concept of population structure and regional innovation ability, introduced relevant theories, and analyzed the population structural trends and spatial distribution characteristics.Secondly, the paper constructed a regional innovation capability evaluation index system, and used the data envelopment analysis method to measure the regional innovation ability of each province, and analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of regional innovation capability. Then the global Moran I index and the Gary C index are used to verify the spatial autocorrelation of regional innovation capability, and the spatial agglomeration degree of regional innovation capability is analyzed according to the local Moran index.Thirdly, using the innovation data and population data of China's 30 provinces in2008-2017,a series of tests were conducted to select the dual fixed effect space Dobermanmodel. The influence of population structure on regional innovation ability is explored from four aspects: urban and rural population structure, population industrial structure, population education structure and population age structure. The results show that the higher education population structure has the most significant effect on promoting regional innovation capacity, followed by the urban population, population density, and secondary industry population structure;the labor population structure has no significant effect on regional innovation capacity;and the provincial innovation capacity has a significant positive space spillover effect. Finally, combined with the results of empirical analysis,it provided countermeasures and suggestions for enhancing the level of regional innovation in China from the perspective of population structure. This article explores the impact of population structure on regional innovation capabilities, and provides a reference for China's future population development, improvement of innovation capabilities, and coordinated development of various regions, and it has certain significance for economic development and policy formulation.
