As China and South Korea increase their cultural and trade exchanges recently, their relationship has become more intimate and Koreans are eager to learn the Chinese language once again.Since China and South Korea began its official diplomatic relations in the 1990 s,the number of Korean international students in China has continued to rank among the highest.Currently,Korean high schools adopt the Chinese language courses as required electives and the Chinese textbooks for Korean students are based on the curriculum designed by the Korean Ministry of Education. These textbooks can only be published after the Ministry of Education approves once they have been written by large publishing companies in Korea. The two textbook editions that will be analyzed and compared in this thesis are ?Chinese 1 ? by Cheon-jae Gyeoyook. One edition was written based on the curriculum in the year 2009,whereas the other was written based on the curriculum in the year 2007.The authors of these two separate editions are all different individuals and the compositions are also different as different curriculums have different learning objectives. The new curriculum comprehensively evaluates the previous curriculum to improve the shortcomings and add new learning objectives and requirements. In comparison,the2009 curriculum is designed to help students in learning more in-depth expressions that articulate their thoughts and emotions in more various circumstances. Both editions satisfy the criteria for “cultivating Korean students” communication capabilities in the Chinese language and exposing them to the Chinese culture" in the curriculum. However, the criteria for "understanding the cultural differences between China and Korea clearly"has not been satisfied.Although both editions share many pros and cons in common, each has its own limitations. This paper compares how each edition meets the curriculum and analyzes the commonalities and differences between them.It begins a comparative analysis of composition, words, text, grammar, practice problems, and culture in the chapter 2.It also summarizes their common advantages, respective advantages, common disadvantages, and respective disadvantages in the chapter 3 based on the analysis in the chapter 2.Lastly,it proposes recommendations for improvement regarding the disadvantages derived from the comparative analysis.
