With the increase of income,China's imported food accounted for the proportion of total consumption of food continues to grow.On the one hand, the scale of China's imported food increased year by year,On the other hand, the quality of imported food in China is worrying, almost all types of imported food are not in line with China's food quality and safety of national standards. What is the overall quality of China's imported food?Does China's Imported food quality has "the Alchian-Allen effect"?This is a question needs to be answered at present. This paper mainly has done the following research:First, build a theoretical model, and put forward the hypothesis that the imported food quality will rise when the import tariff falls and the transportation cost increases;Secondly, using the Nested Logit model, estimates the quality of imported food in China during the period from 2001 to 2015,and compares the quality of imported food from 36 countries; In addition, the relationship between tariff reduction, transportation costs and the quality of imported food in China was explored, once again verified the "the Alchian-Allen effect" and the implementation of China's free trade zone strategy also contributes to"the Alchian-Allen effect".Finally, the conclusion and policy suggestions of this paper are put forward. The results show that the quality of imported food in China is increasing during the 2001-2015 period.Tariff is a significant negative impact on the quality of imported food in China,The lower the tariff, the higher the quality of imported food in China. The results also show that transportation costs have a significantly positive impact on China's imported quality, this proves the existence of the "Alchian-Allen effect" in the Chinese food industry. The results of the robustness test show that this result does not change due to the different types of imported food quality, different import food measurement methods and the choice of different variables of transport costs. Moreover, the implementation of China's free trade zone strategy promotes the "the Alchian-Allen effect",in the framework of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area is particularly significant.
