In the era of the knowledge economy,innovation has gradually become an important driving force for the continuous development of national and regional economies.With the rapid development of China's economy,the return of overseas students has become a trend.Through overseas study or work experience,returnees have mastered international advanced knowledge,which is a heterogeneous knowledge for developing countries and can broaden the knowledge breadth of enterprises.In recent years,both the national and local governments at all levels have issued a series of policies and measures to create a fertile ground for the returnees to innovate and start their own businesses.As a special group,returnees have gradually attracted the attention of scholars.Due to the availability of data,some scholars have begun to study the influence of the returnee entrepreneurs and executives on corporate innovation activities.However,there is still a large number of returnees who cannot directly enter the senior management level of the company after they return home country and cannot directly configure the enterprise resources.Can these non-executive returnees also playing a role in improving corporate innovation performance?In this context,this article focuses on non-executive returnees as the starting point for the study,and explores the role of non-executive returnees in promoting corporate innovation performance.This paper takes absorptive capacity and environmental turbulence as adjustment variables to study the regulat ory role of absorptive capacity on the relationship between non-executive returnees and corporate innovation performance,and also considered the regulatory role of environmental turbulence on the relationship between non-executive returnees and corporate innovation performance.In addition,this paper studied the joint adjustment effect of absorptive capacity and environmental turbulence on the relationship between non-executive returnees and corporate innovation performance.The results of the study show that: first,nonexecutive returnees will promote the corporate innovation performance.The international advanced knowledge brought by non-executive returnees belongs to heterogeneous knowledge that will broaden the breadth of knowledge and help improve the corporate innovation performance.Secondly,absorptive capacity will strengthen the promotion effect of non-executive returnees on the corporate innovation performance.It explain that companies with strong absorptive capacity can digest the knowledge brought by non-executive returnees and integrate them with existing knowledge.Through organizational learning,it can strengthen the depth of corporate knowledge and then promote the corporate innovation performance.Thirdly,environmental turbulence will weaken the promotion effect of non-executive returnees on the corporate innovation performance.When the degree of environmental turbulence is high,the knowledge brought by non-executive returnees can only broaden the knowledge breadth of enterprises to a certain extent,and cannot dynamically match the demand of environment for the breadth of corporate knowledge,which will weaken the promotion effect of non-executive returnees on the corporate innovation performance.Finally,the effect of absorptive capacity on the non-executive returnees and corporate innovation performance also depends on environmental turbulence.When the degree of environmental turbulence is high,it takes a certain amount of time for companies to absorb heterogeneous knowledge,that is,the lag time of organizational learning is stronger.Thus,the speed of company strengthen their knowledge depth cannot dynamically match the changes of external environment.Therefore,the role of absorptive capacity in promoting the non-executive returnees on corporate innovation performance will be weakened.According to the conclusions of the study,this paper proposes relevant suggestions for encouraging returnees to come back home,improving the absorptive capacity of enterprises and providing a relatively stable external environmental for returnees.
