Due to the globalization of the world economy,the level of development of the manufacturing industry directly determines the international competitiveness of a country and its status as an international division of labor and plays a very important role in the economic and social development of its own country.The gap between the low cost advantage of China's manufacturing factors and that of the developed countries is gradually narrowing.Some foreign-invested manufacturing industries have taken the turn toward countries with lower production costs.Therefore,China's manufacturing industry needs R&D and technological innovation is needed to improve Industrial competitiveness.In view of the status quo of manufacturing industry in our country,this paper raises the following three questions,the first question: Whether the impact of R&D on productivity is related to the stage of industrial development,that is,the life cycle of the industry.Question 2: If the impact of R & D on productivity is related to the stage of industrial development,is it related to the type of innovation? Question three: whether the different types of innovation have an impact on industry productivity.This article quantitatively analyzes product innovation and process innovation,mainly using different patents.First of all,we first determine the product life cycle stage of the manufacturing industries in 2000-2010,mainly through the difference between the growth rate of new product output value and the patent growth rate.And then measured the manufacturing productivity of our country from 2000 to 2010 based on the stochastic frontier model.Then we analyzed the effect of R & D on the productivity in different life-cycle stages under the model based on the product life cycle theory.The result is Resulting from the different types of innovations;Finally,based on the results of empirical analysis,we put forward corresponding policy recommendations to China's manufacturing industry.Research results:(1)R&D does not necessarily promote the productivity growth of various industries in the manufacturing industry,except related to the industries involved and the time involved in the R&D.It also relates to the industry's owndevelopment rules,that is,the stage of the product life cycle in which the industry is located related.In the early stage of industrial development,that is,the growth period,the R&D investment and the productivity growth showed a positive correlation.(2)The impact of R&D on productivity is related to its type of innovation.R&D and product innovation jointly promote productivity growth,while R&D and process innovation do not necessarily promote productivity growth.(3)The mechanism of product innovation and process innovation to productivity is also related to the law of self-development of the industry.In the early stage of product life cycle,product innovation mainly promotes product innovation and productivity innovation does not necessarily affect the productivity.The growth has played a catalytic role.
