Since the 1950 s,Japan has set foot on the construction of metro politan area centered on Tokyo. With fast economic growth and rapid i mprovement of urbanization, labor force, industries and resources wer e highly concentrated in Tokyo, metropolitan sicknesses appeared such as traffic jams, extension of commuting time and deterioration of li ving conditions.Meanwhile, the upgrading of manufacturing structure and expansion of heavy industries brought about such problems as envi ronmental pollution and regional development imbalance. In order to s olve these problems,Japan has made a whole set of relatively compreh ensive industry policies and supporting regulations for the capital m etropolitan area, and also made an effort in policy control to achiev e market guidance, resources' allocation optimization, dispersion of industrial distribution, and orderly flow of population.Consequently, the one-polar construction has been altered, and the multi-core netw ork development mode has been gradually established that metropolitan circle is consisted of multi small city groups, which has strengthen ed Tokyo's international competitiveness and has been the strong eng ine for boosting Japan's economic growth. The construction of metropolitan areas is an important strategy of sustainable development in China. At present,China's metropolita n development is still in its start-up stage, while manufacturing is at a critical point of turning from large-scale to strong and intensi ve growth,we are confronting realistic problems such as considerable regional difference, not enough reasonable industrial structure, slo w development in regional synergy, which have all been met and experie nced by the Japanese counterparts. This paper tries to analyze the co upling relationship between the evolution of the manufacturing industry of Tokyo Metropolitan Area and the spatial distribution characteri stics of the manufacturing industry so as to figure out influential f actors and inherent disciplines. It is of realistic importance for Ch ina to push forward upgrading of manufacturing and coordination of me tropolitan by using helpful experiences and practices in the developm ent of Japanese metropolitan. This paper is consisted of 6 parts. The 1st part is about the ba sic theories and literature reviews relating to this paper. The 2nd p art sorts and analyzes three stages of Tokyo Metropolitan Area, namel y,“development of core cities”,“formation of single-core urban a gglomeration” and “development and maturity of multiple-core metrop olitan area”.The 3rd part,in view of the development situation of the metropolitan area, studies staged features and dominating industr ies in each stage during the evolution of the manufacturing industry of Tokyo Metropolitan Area, which experienced all stages of recovery, expansion, maturity and recession, the general pattern of periodic ru les.The 4th part analyzes the spatial distribution characteristics o f the manufacturing industry in different stages to figure out influe ntial factors and inherent disciplines. It is discovered that the dev elopment of industrial structure and the change of spatial distributi on of the manufacturing industry of Tokyo Metropolitan Area are close ly connected and mutually corresponding to the development of the met ropolitan area. The structural and spatial evolution of manufacturing industry concentrates in the polar of core cities, radiates and spre ads within the area and then forms the multiple-core network structur e to achieve the “heavy in the east and light in the west” structur e,which focuses on the heavy industry in the east and light industry in the west. The 5th part concludes the mechanism of spatial evoluti on of Tokyo metropolitan area, analyzes the internal logic, interacti on and coupling relationship from aspects of nature, population, technique and policy making.Last but not the least, the 6th part summari zes the successful experiences of manufacturing evolution in Japan me tropolitan area, which includes keeping regional industrial coordinat ion, increasing investments in high-tech industries, focusing on inte gration of policy making and market regulation.
