As the product supply chain that enterprises face becomes increasingly complex,the market demand becomes gradually diversified,and the uncertainty of technological innovation increases,the single technical ability makes it difficult for enterprises to launch competitive new products,the diversified technical bases will help enterprises to improve their R&D efficiency and product innovation ability,and then gain market competitive advantage and promote the growth of enterprises.All of this requires enterprises to implement technological diversification strategies to copy with the external environment full of uncertainty and risk,while the implementation of technological diversification strategy is closely related to the cognitive foundations and values of top management team.Although the academic circles have achieved rich research results in the study of the relationship among technological diversification,TMT characteristics and enterprise innovation performance,the existing literature has failed to consider the different models of enterprise innovation comprehensively and discussed how TMT characteristics affect the relationship between technological diversification and enterprise dual-innovation performance rarely.Based on the resource-based theory,upper echelons theory and technological innovation theory,this research divides enterprise innovation into exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation according to how much new knowledge has been used in the innovation processes.This paper discusses how technological diversification affects enterprise dual-innovation,analyzes how TMT characteristics moderate the relationship between technological diversification and two models of innovation,then puts forward the corresponding research model and hypothesis.Using patent data of China IT industry from 2006 to 2015 in 51 listed firms,this paper uses STATA13.0 statistics software to test the sample data by descriptive statisticsand correlation analysis,negative binomial fixed effect regression analysis and other methods.The empirical results show as follows:(1)Technological diversification has a positive effect on dual-innovation performance,and the effect on exploratory innovation is greater than the effect on exploitative innovation;(2)In terms of TMT basic characteristics,team size has a positive effect on the relationship between technological diversification and exploitative innovation,team average age has a negative effect on the relationship between technological diversification and exploitative innovation,the team average education has a negative effect on the relationship between technological diversification and exploratory innovation,the average number of team members' concurrent post has a positive effect on the relationship between technological diversification and dual-innovation,and the effect on exploratory innovation is greater than the effect on exploitative innovation,the moderating effects of the other basic characteristics are not significant;(3)In terms of TMT heterogeneity,the moderating effect of other heterogeneity characteristics are not significant except that TMT tenure heterogeneity positively moderates the relationship between technological diversification and exploitative innovation.According to the empirical results,this paper will provide some suggestions for the high-tech enterprises to improve their technological innovation ability and optimize the structure of top management team.
