In the "Internet +" era,both supply and demand sides have undergone significant changes.The convergence of technologies and industries and upgrading of consumer experience make the competitive environment of enterprises non-linear.Cross-industry competition becomes either an active or passive strategic choice that should be constantly reviewed and prepared by the enterprises in various industries.Since cross-industry competition inevitably involves enterprises in two industries,the question that who will be the active mover aroused our interest.Most of the existing researches on cross-industry entrepreneurship adopt a single perspective either from resource-based view or institution theory,mainly focus on the traditional constructs such as business relatedness and legitimacy,ignoring the key role of complementry assets in the enterprises and industries,and the strategic management of complementary assets in different stages of cross-industry entrepreneurship.This research adopted the perspective of complementary asset management from capability theory,resource dependence theory and industry architecture theory,to examine the cross-industry business strategies' influence factors,influence mechanism and consequence through the longitudinal embedded case study of Alibaba'll years of cross-industry activities in the logistics industry.We hope to build the preliminary theory of cross-industry entrepreneurship and provide theoretical guidance for practice.This study proposed that the corporate cross-industry entrepreneurial activities are affected by the mobility and complementarity of complementary assets in the industry architecture,the requirements of firm strategies on complementary assets,and the characteristics of complementary assets inside the focal firm.Corporate cross-industry entrepreneurship will feed back into the industry architecture,firm strategy and resources,which form the starting status of internal and external environment in the next phase.In order to gain the competitive industry architecture advantages,firms should determine whether to engage in the cross-industry entrepreneurship and select suitable strategies(include the strategies of follow,deconstruct,control and construct)based on their perceptions of contextual factors in respective stages.
