With the rapid development of modern architecture towards lightness and naturalization, while paying attention to design practice, there is an urgent need for support from design theory, and the famous German architect Frei Otto as a "lightweight architecture" and "natural architecture" advocates, researchers and practitioners, his architectural theories and methods have important value and significance for the development of contemporary architecture. This paper mainly focuses on Frei Otto's architectural experiment method.First,it reviews the way of Frei Otto's architectural research and practice.and separately describes his life, study and work experience, the concept and research of "light building" as well as the thinking and practice of "natural architecture".Secondly, from the perspective of methodology,Frei Otto's architectural experimental methods including physical experimental methods, model experimental methods, material experimental methods and structural experimental methods were systematically analyzed; Then, from the perspective of the application of the method, selecting four representative architectural designs of Frei Otto for in-depth interpretation; Finally, starting from the theme of Frei Otto's architectural experiment method, the space design of the 'Peacock Garden' of Nanjing University of The Arts was used as the subject, and the space design exploration was carried out by using physical experiments and model experiments.Through the above research and exploration,it hopes that the design academic community will pay enough attention to Frei Otto's architectural experimental methods, and apply this method to space design to promote the continuous innovation of contemporary architecture.
