From the Western Zhou Dynasty to the moderm era,the status of f "Qiu" in the Chinese medicine literature has gradually increased from a dispensible name to a syndrom. Its modern definition includes three kinds of nasal diseases or even more, they are Allergic Rhinitis,Vasomotor Rhinitis, and Eosinophilic Non-Allergic Rhinitis. For 30 years my instructor, professor Zhang Shunan, has been using Traditional Chinese meidcal theory and herbs in treament to respiratory disease,he,as well as many clincal practitioners, are rich in experience, and the therapeutic feedbacks are satisfied.Modern Chinese medicine research focused on allergic rhinitis, however, studys on the other two kinds of nasal diseases are nearly blank. Objective:Reaching a further understanding of "Qiu",both in theories and clinical experiences,in order to lay a solid foundation for clinical practice. Methods:This thesis is divided into two parts. The literature review part summarise the modren guidelines and TCM experiences of modren famous docrors. The body part combs the relevant contents of the ancient medical literatures between the Han Dynasty and the Opium War,recognizes the similaritis and differences in meanings and treatments of "Qiu",and related nasal diseases in different periods. It can provide a valid background for the subsequent review of the instructor experience.Collect the data of patients suffer from "Qiu"and professor's decoctions for them, then do the research thorugh softwares and analise the results. Results:In the review of meanings of the "Qiu" in different periods,it's easy to tell the point of divergrences in doctors of different ages, even contemporary generations, however, through these constant discussions, the prescriptions are constantly enriched, and the meaning of sputum is diminished. The whole process reflects the treatment strategy of TCM syndrome differentiation rather than disease. In an environment with limited research methods in ancient times, this is a helplessness effort, but it is also the core driving force for TCM to develop at any time.Through data mining we can obtain the basic dicoction and common herbs combinations for "Qiu".Combined with follow-up cases,we can find some unregullar herbs are used in specific situations, and we may speculate that the patients with yang deficiency get more benefit form TCM treament. Conclusion:Most of the TCM guides, textbooks and modern doctors' experience tend to deal "Qiu" with herbs of warm and heat. The experience of professor Zhang also indicates a better effect for the patients with Yang deficiency and cold. However, when browsing ancient books,it can be found that the decoctions are distinct and affected by the mainstream theories of each era, they are not alike from modren ideas neither. This difference can not be full explaind by different searching methords or key words, which worth to do further disscussion in the future. However,it can broden the horizion for us in today's clinical practice.
