China Photographic Study Society(Huashe)was active in Shanghai during the 1920s and 1930s.Inheriting the predecessors, their works embody unique expressions of geographical features and cultural connotation.Starting with the foundation of China Photographic Study Society, this thesis offers an overall and entire understanding of the society through the analysis of members, organization structure, operation model and social activities. The China Photographic Study Society was co-founded by elites from intellectual circle, business circle and media fields. They constructed a grand cultural circle with the art and literature circles while playing its own role. The society further expanded their influences through exhibitions and publications, through which the fine art photography they promoted was recognized broadly by the public from academic and visual aspects; This thesis further studies the rich connotation of fine art photography, and tries to figure out the true purpose of founding the society through the analysis of the identity of the members from China Photographic Study Society.New cultural groups represented by China Photographic Study Society expressed their vision to reconstruct Chinese culture and transform the society while enriching their spare time life. They were willing to absorb the western civilization, and in order to make it better integrate into Chinese art, they transform the western medium of communication----photography into Chinese fine art photography, promoting in an organizational way to form a social trend and change the public acknowledgment This is probably an ideal way to balance the pursuit of reconstructing Chinese culture and accepting foreign culture. In the end,it is undeniable that China Photographic Study Society exerted certain abuses during that time which are closely connected to the culture psychology generated under particular historical background.
