BaiLu Yuan is written by the famous Chinese writer Chen Zhongshi,this is an excellent novel in the history of Chinese contemporary literature which has high literary value and artistic value.Its attracted much critical attention since its publication for its ideological content,art forms and characters.At present,the research results of BaiLu Yuan are very rich in academic circles,especially in the fields of the theme of the novel,the narrative art and the analysis of the characters.Although these results are of great significance to this thesis,they concentrate more on the literature,culture and folk custom.In an overall view,there are few studies on the novel BaiLu Yuan from the perspective of pragmatics.Language and literature are closely related,so language research and literature research could be combined to supply each other.Jef Verschueren is of the opinion that using language is a process of making continuous linguistic choices,and pragmatics in his opinion is a perspective on language from the aspects of cognition,society and culture.The novel contains a large number of complete language practice,which provides a rich materials for pragmatics research.The analysis of literary works,especially on the dialogues in novels based on the theory of pragmatics,can also provide new ideas for literary appreciation and research.The novel BaiLu Yuan has created a number of vivid images of diversity of characters.It also contains plenty of dialogues.First of all,after reading the text of BaiLu Yuan and reviewed the former achievements related to it,this paper selected varieties of dialogue as the language materials and made a classification on them.In this paper,the achievements on literary pragmatics and linguistic adaptation theory have also been reviewed.This thesis is undertaken to have an analysis on the conversations in the novel BaiLu Yuan based on Jef Verschueren' s Linguistic Adaptation Theory.Adaptation Theory has a great explanation power on literary appreciation and research.Although the communicative situation in the novel cannot be totally same as the real situation in life,but the dialogues both in novel and real situation must rely on the the language situation and obey the communicative rules.Adaptation Theory is different from the traditional language analysis theory,it tries to integrate cognitive,social and cultural factors into pragmatics research.Adaptation theory provides a new and effective way for us to study literary language especially on dialogues in novel.Secondly,the dialogues in BaiLu Yuan is the result of language choice which adapt to the mental world,physical world,and the social world of the characters.From chapter 2 to chapter 5,this paper interprets the adaptability through analyzing the character language.As to literature appreciation,only by combining the content of speech with the characters' psychology,personality,society and culture,can readers understand their language choice well.What' s more,the Adaptation Theory can also be used to guide the creation of literary creators,especially in creating more life-like character image.In order to deepen the understanding and application of the classical theory of pragmatics,and to better grasp the mechanism of language generation and understanding,this thesis analyzes the dialogues and pragmatic strategies of characters in the novel BaiLu Yuan.by examples,and try to explore the underlying reasons behind its language selection based on Adaptation Theory.The study of dialogues in BaiLu Yuan from the perspective of adaptation theory is wished to be helpful to the language study of the novel BaiLu Yuan and the other literature works.
