A Study Of Female Images In Documentaries About Chinese Women In The New Century

Documentary movie about China's “comfort women” Twenty Two debuted on 14 August 2017.In spite that the sensitivity of the subject and shortage of funds once contributed to the much-delayed release of the documentary,as the proverb goes,“the fragrance of plum blossoms comes from bitter cold”,the film became an unexpected hit,with box office revenue exceeding 170 million yuan within three weeks,making it the highest grossing Chinese documentary.The success of the documentary Twenty Two is not only attributable to the attention and support from all walks of life,but also to a large extent the special subject selected by the director Guo Ke,which no one else dared to touch upon.Meanwhile,the images of elderly people under the lens are not a special group in the eyes of others,but are ordinary and real people.Since the beginning of the new century,female subject documentaries have abruptly skyrocketed,from The Box directed by Ying Weiwei to Bing Ai by Feng Yan,and from Sisters to Twenty Two,representing the increase in quantity and the wider range in subjects.Traditional countryside women,female migrant workers and lesbians,etc.become main characters of female subject documentaries.When portraying the images of women,more attention has been paid to the female selfhood and social care.This paper will take female subject documentaries in the new century as research materials and interpret the images of women therein.This paper will analyze the images of women in female subject documentaries in the new century mainly from the following three aspects.Firstly,analyze the causes resulting in women's situation.The status of women and roles they play in documentaries are influenced by female physical and physiological characteristics.However,the root cause resulting in women's situation is the construction and cognition of women's identity by the public.Secondly,females,as individuals,have their own desires and rebellious spirits.However,under the influence of traditional ideology,many females choose to tolerate and continue to be at the subordinate status.While some females choose to escape from traditional constraints instead and pursue their true selves.Thirdly,study the practical significance of images of women in female subject documentaries from the perspectives of sociology and anthropology etc.and manifest the gap between ideal and reality from the perspective of social care to females.In the process of pursuing ideals,females understand the realistic society,the female consciousness starts to awaken and they fight against the social reality to seek for changes to women's situation.While writing about the above three parts,this paper analyzes and summaries the current research status on female subject documentaries;meanwhile,it also explains the syndromes existed in female subject documentaries during the current period and puts forward strategies for reform and development.At the end of the article,the author combines the above research results to analyze the graduation dancer,combining theory with practice,hoping to provide some reference and reference for the research of female images in the female documentary.
