Culture-loaded words mean the words that contain certain cultural connotations,or carry specific ones under specific language backgrounds.Four generations of the same court,as one of the masterpieces of Lao She,reflect the humourous, concise and refined language features,a large number of culture-loaded words appear in this novel, the accurate translation of these words plays an important role in the effective dissemination of chinese culture, but due to the huge differences between chinese and french cultures, translation of these culture-loaded words is faced with great difficulties, therefore, how to adopt appropriate translation strategies to accomplish this task is a topic worthy of study. In the 1970s,the functional translation theory proposed by scholars such as Reiss,Vermeer and Nord in Germany has brought a new perspective to the translation community. It focuses on Skopostheorie and emphasizes the role of the target text in the translation process.According to Skopostheorie, the primary law followed by all translation acts is the"law of purpose",the purpose to be achieved by the act of translating determines the process of the entire act of translating, that is,"the purpose determines the method of translation".Based on this, this thesis takes the Skopostheorie as a theoretical basis, selects the culture-loaded words in the translated version of Si Shi Tong Tang. The thesis will firstly introduce the Skopostheorie and the culture-loaded words from multiple angles,it will analyse the difficulty of translation of the culture-loaded words. Then it will introduce Four generations of the same court and classify the culture-loaded words in this novel.Afterwards,it focuses on the domestication and the foreignization translation strategies,it points out that the selection of the two strategies can be guided by the central principle of "the purpose determines the method of translation",it will analyse the translation methods in the french version of Si Shi Tong Tang, through listing the specific cases, under the guidance of the"three principles" of Skopostheorie,it will elaborate for achieving cross-cultural communication how translators use flexibly use these methods such as literal translation, literal translation and note, free translation, omission, conversion and supplementation. Finally,it is concluded that in order to achieve readers' expectation of reading and the purpose of intercultural exchange,it should not be confined to either method, the strategies of domestication and foreignization should be adopted at the same time,a variety of translation methods should be used in combination so that the more chinese culture could be introduced to french readers on the basis of fluency of the text translated.Through the study of variation of the source language culture in the target language culture dans the practice of translation chinese-french,this thesis will research the strategy of translation for the culture-loaded words in literary works to promote the worldwide spread of Chinese literature.
