On The Suffering Writing Of Shen Congwen's Xiangxi Novels

For a long time,Shen Congwen's xiangxi novels have attracted a mass of researchers and also impressed the readers with his pure and graceful writing techniques.Even though Shen Congwen strongly praises the nature and native life forms in xiangxi,such seeming prosperity and harmony are full of suffering and misery.The characters in xiangxi in Shen Congwen's novels are mostly kind and lovable.They are honest and loyal,and even would be difficult to be understood by the city people.However,the lives of these individuals are always full of misery,and their final endings always come to tragedies as well.For instance,the novel‘Pai-Tzu ‘,‘The Husband ‘,‘ Xiao Xiao ‘,‘The Border Town ‘,all of them reveal the misery of the bottom people in western Hunan,which would be difficult to control by themselves.They are forced to suffer an arduousness due to the poverty,losing happiness because of uncertain lives,or difficult to escape the fateful tragedies in the end.These unfortunate xiangxi people is just an epitome of the whole xiangxi world.Through the misery writing in Shen Congwen's novels,it would be clearly to perceive Shen Congwen's love and compassion for his homeland--xiangxi.Specifically,Shen Congwen pursues a kind of harmonious and proper beauty as his writing style.It is seldom for him to express suffering in a direct way with flesh and blood,but hiding such sorrows in an extremely calm narrative method and poetic texts.The way to describe misery beyond common literature techniques makes his xiangxi novels become more shining from artistic aspect.This dissertation takes Shen Congwen's xiangxi works as the main research object,revealing multifaceted suffering forms and analyzing artistic tactics of misery writing so as to interpret the rich connotations,misery consciousness and aesthetic reflections in his works deeply.This thesis is divided into three parts: Introduction,which includes the values and significance of this theme,literature review,and methodology.The second part is the main body part,which is divided into four chapters: The first chapter discusses the implied meanings of misery writing in the novels of Shen Congwen's.Meanwhile,according to the living conditions and personal experience of different characters in his works,this chapter also classifies these various misery phenomena in the end;through reading widely and narratology study,the second chapter analyzes misery writing from the artistic strategies view deeply;the third chapter discusses the original reasons of such misery writing combining with Shen Congwen's personal experience,the background of minorities and also the geographical characteristics in xiangxi;based on the discussions of the previous chapters,the last chapter analyzes Shen Congwen's affirmation and explorations of lives through transcendence andreflection of misery.The third part is the conclusion part,which summarizes the literary significance of Shen Congwen‘s misery writing,and some shortcomings of this dissertation as well.
