The flabellum,is an ancient ceremonial fan in China.The difference from an ordinary fan is that it has a long handle and is usually held by two hands of the waiter and stands on both sides of the emperor.flabellum often appear in the ceremonial contingent,both for sheltering and ceremonial purposes.flabellum imagery first appeared in southern China during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.The late Northern Wei D’ynasty took Luoyang as the center and spread radially in the north.During the Sui and Tang dynastiy,the imperial court perfected the relevant system,and then followed the same line until the Song,Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties.Studying the flabellum helps to understand the transformation of Chinese etiquette system between Han and Tang dynasties.This article mainly studies flabellum from three aspects:First,from the aspect of artifacts,combing out the evolution rule of flabellum in ancient China;secondly,from the aspect of system,it analyzes the process and application of flabellum system establishment;Third,from the perspective of flabellum sources,explore the possibility of civilized exchanges in the early China and the two river basins.This article develops the following study:The first chapter is the classification and staging of flabellums.flabellums can be divided into four types according to fan shape:A type circular fan,B type semicircular fan,C type square fan and D type peach fan.On this basis,the subtypes can be divided into three phases:Wei-Jin-Sui,Tang-Five and Five-Year-Qing.On the basis of this stage,the problem of the formation of the flabellum system was introduced.The second chapter is the transmission of the flabellum and the flabellum system,flabellum first appeared in southern China during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.After moving to Luoyang in the Northern Wei Dynasty,it was transmitted to the north with the reform of Xiaowen Emperor,and then inherited from the Eastern.The path of the flabellum shows a trend from point to surface in the country from south to north.In the flabellum system,the flabellum was of a ceremonial nature before the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Sui period,but the system was not formed.During the Tang Zhenguan period,the flabellum finally came into being.The core of the system was embodied in the use of the type and number of flabellums to classify the levels of feudal ruling classes.During the Tang Dynasty,flabellum status was once again improved and a new cable fan system was added.In the subsequent period of the Song,Yuan,Ming,and Qing Dynasties,the flabellum system did not change,but only increased or decreased in the number of fans used,and slightly changed in appearance.The third chapter discusses the external factors of flabellum source.In the West,flabellums were used in ancient Egypt and medieval Europe.There are also images of long-handled fans during the Spring and Autumn Period in China.The appearance is similar between the two.This article explores the possibility of the flabellum being introduced into China twice,through the early Silk Road and Buddhism.
