All around the world,there are many countries and areas has already launched the educational career of Chinses as a second language.France,as a country that is not located around Chinese-character-culture-circle,however,have made a distinctive progress in Chinese language education,especially on teaching Chinese characters.The underlying reason for its success is worth speculating.Methode d'Initiation a la Langue a l'Ecriture chinoises and Perfectionnement a la Langue a l 'Ecriture chinoises(chinoises for short),as well as Snowball Chinese(Snowball for short),are text books composed and edited by famous sinologist Joel Bellassen,who is the leading figure of French Chinese language education.This thesis made a thorough analysis on these textbooks and discovered that its principle of "paying attention to both Chinese characters and words" deserves further rumination.Vocabulary is an important part of International Chinese education,while Bellassen paid attention to the special function of Chinese characters and emphasized that there should be two"teaching units" in Chinese language,which are "characters" and "words".Prominence given to vocabulary teaching and its unique principle bestow these textbooks an exceptional position and make them one of the most popular choice among French Chinese teachers.This paper targets at the textbooks mentioned above,in order to analyze the meaning and significance of "paying attention to both Chinese characters and words".The study starts from evaluating general design and techniques of teaching Chinese vocabulary,considering psychological researches related to students and lastly,giving some suggestions on Chinese vocabulary teaching based on the study.The research methods include literature research,comparative study,content analysis and interview.The general analysis is presented from perspectives of teaching philosophy,teaching goal and teaching principle;the structural analysis focus on overall and main body arrangements.Based on the database created for the textbooks,some features of Chinese vocabulary teaching are summarized.In the Introduction,I clarified the reason,main contents and significance of conducting this research,and make a connection of related researches within and out of China.This main body of the paper is divided into three chapters:1)the first chapter is the analysis of the materials,in the end of the chapter,features of the textbooks is revealed;2)the second chapter is the comparative study among these textbooks,so as to form Bellassen's opinion on Chinese vocabulary teaching.This part is developed withsupplement of the author's interview with Bellassen;3)the third chapter is the suggestions on Chinese vocabulary teaching from perspectives of both students and teachers.Through the analysis of the textbooks and interview with Bellassen,I generalize four principles.First,it is important to have an objective attitude towards the two "teaching units" and attribute attention to the function of Chinese characters.Second,to improve the efficiency of teaching and learning,the separation of these two units is inevitable,which means words and characters should be deigned as separate sections in textbooks,teaching of characters and words should not be at the same time in classroom.Third,the principle of"snowball" is supposed to be applied while designing texts.This is to recombine and repeat limited characters to help students remember and understand the meaning of characters and words.Besides,I have some suggestions on the teaching of Chinese vocabulary.First,endowing characters its deserved position and discard fear towards character learning.Second,teachers need to make good use of students' memory and cognitive ability.Lastly,at Novice Level,it is necessary to devote more attention to characters to foster student's interests and consciousness of Chinese writing system.At Intermediate Level,the more important task is to enrich students' vocabulary.All in all,the paper summarizes and testifies the meaning and significance of "paying attention to both characters and words" by comparative analysis and study of the textbooks,as well as providing the author's suggestion to enrich the theory of Chinese vocabulary teaching.
