Study On The English Translation Of Terms Related To The Efficacy Of "JieBiao" In Chinese Medicine

ObjectiveThis paper aims at exploring accurate and proper English translation of action terms of jiebiao based on the theory of herbs property.There are mainly three purposes:(1)to give more accurate and proper English translation of action terms;(2)to provide research methods for future research in this field;(3)to promote the standardization of English translation of action terms.Methods1.Reviewing the current research status and problems in English translation of action terms related to jiebiaoBy reviewing relevant keywords in CNKI,the paper analyzed and summarized the existing problems of action terms from the aspect of both Chinese and English.Then focused on one of the problems of literal translation and took it as the main study question.2.Exploring the Chinese connotation of action terms related to jiebiaoBased on the property theory of Chinese herb,the action terms were selected,including such terms as fa han jie biao,jie biao san han,qu feng jie biao,qu feng san han,fa san feng han,jie biao tui re,jie ji tui re,shu san feng re,and jie biao tou zhen.According to the property theory of Chinese herb,the connotation of action terms was examined by conducting a systematical study of ancient and modern literature.For the difficult part of the study,relevant experts were consulted to ensure that the results were reliable.3.C omparing the English translation of the action terms related to jiebiaoEight authoritative versions of English translation and dictionaries were selected.Then the Chinese and English connotation of related action terms were compared based on the theory of herbal property.Finally the more proper and individualized English translation of action terms were concluded.ResultsIn this study,the English translation of action terms should be adjusted according to specific context,i.e.fa han jie biao could be translated into induce sweating/perspiration to release the exterior,fa san feng han into disperse wind and cold,san han jie biao into dissipate cold to release the exterior,qu feng jie biao into dispel wind to release the exterior,qu feng san han into dispel wind and dissipate cold,shu san feng re into disperse wind and heat,jie biao tou zhen into release the exterior and promote rash eruption by dispersing,jie biao tui re into release the exterior and reduce fever by dispersing,and jie ji tui re into release muscle and relieve fever by sweating.ConclusionDue to the differences between Chinese and English in culture and logic,the connotation of action terms hides in the special language structure of Chinese.By the analysis of properties and actions of Chinese herb,we may get a more accurate and proper English translation of action terms based on the theory of herbs properties.
