Alexander Nikolaievitch Scriabin(1872-1915)is a Russian composer and pianist around the turn of the twentieth century, who graduated from the Moscow Conservatory of Music. He created many kinds of works, among which piano music occupies an important position. His works are dramatic and full of passion. Not only did his early works inherit the tradition of Russian classical music in a new way,but also combined with that of western European music.Influenced by Chopin, his works are infused with Romantic lyricism.Among his early ones,Mazuka op.3 is the grand-scale debut. Here,he adopted Chopin's style, whose characteristics are maintained as the basis, but inserted his own unique techniques and style. In the article,I take Scriabin's Mazukaop.3 as the research object. It comprises three parts, which look into the music against the existing literature in tandem with my own thoughts and reflections obtained through practicing the music. The first section broadly overviews Scriabin's early works, and then focuses on the background of creating Mazukaop.3.The second section explores the characteristics of the music by analyzing its four major aspects,i.e.,musical structure, melody, rhythm, and harmony. Then it explores the individuality and commonality by comparing the Mazuka played by Scriabin and that by Chopin.Based upon the findings of the first two sections, the last section provides a performance annotation of the music, focusing on its musical structure, melody, rhythm and beat,as well as harmony.
