Chinese painting has a long history and a wide variety of subjects. They can be roughly divided into three subjects:characters, landscapes, and flowers and birds. From ancient times to the present, many painters in history have been working hard at their own fields of excellence and have finally achieved brilliant artistic achievements. However, painters who can be experts in all subjects are often in the minority. For example,Mengfu Zhao,a painter of the Yuan Dynasty, was not only proficient in painting, but also in calligraphy;Tao Shi of the Qing Dynasty was not only good at painting landscapes, but also had his own unique understanding of orchid and bamboo's performance...But,such painters are often known by their most accomplished and influential subjects in the history including Binhong Huang,a landscape painter of the 20th century.Although his flower and bird paintings are not inferior to his landscape paintings, yet the landscape paintings are too famous and have an important position in the history of painting. As a result, few researches have focused on his flower and bird paintings.Nowadays,Binhong Huang's flower and bird paintings have gained more and more public recognition and attention. This paper hopes to make a deep understanding of the writing and painting techniques by studying the formation of the painting method of Binhong Huang's flower and bird and analyzing its use of pen, ink, color and layout.Binhong Huang's flower and bird paintings emphasize the use of pens and ink. They follow the traditional painting method and go deep into life, incorporating their own emotions and ink programs. Therefore, his flower and bird paintings have constructed their own unique artistic style, which is different from the school of painting active in Shanghai of the same period. It is indispensable for us to understand the artistic style of Binhong Huang's flower and bird painting by studying the breakthrough in ink and technique. Therefore, this thesis mainly analyzes Binhong Huang's flower and bird painting style system from the two aspects of ink and technique breakthrough. His flower and bird paintings,on the basis of in-depth tradition, have combined his deep education and sketching experience in many years. In his painting creation,he not only pays attention to sketching, but also upholds the artistic concept of painting with books. And he gets fusion and breakthrough in the ink, colo:r,composition and other aspects on the basis of his landscape painting. He fully applied the "five strokes and seven inks" writing and ink rules to the creation of flower and bird paintings, and integrated his own unique understanding of painting creation. That provides us with references to explore his flower and bird painting style and current practical significance. This thesis is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, the author analyzes the reasons for the formation of Binhong Huang's profound brushwork and ink method from the deep foundation of his education, the idea of inheriting the "life of seeing things" and the artistic concept of "homology of painting and calligraphy".The second chapter is the main part of this thesis. It mainly studies the influence of Binhong Huang's landscape painting on flower and bird painting. His flower and bird paintings absorb the features of landscape paintings, such as the application of "five strokes and seven inks" in flower and bird paintings, and the use of pens based on the principle of "painting and calligraphy pens".Based on these features, the author explores Binhong Huang's fusion and breakthrough in ink techniques in flower and bird paintings. The third chapter analyzes the color and the layout of the chapter to discuss the innovation of Binhong Huang's flower and bird painting techniques. The absorption of folk colors by his flower and bird paintings, the excavation and application of "watercolor method" and "spot dyeing method" make the works form their own unique style different from the traditional paradigm. The fourth chapter discusses the influence and inspiration of Binhong Huang's painting ink and technique on contemporary painting creation. At the same time,it also provides a guidance for some problems in the current creation of flower and bird paintings.
